Description

Maintenance technicians for aircraft (AMTs) carry out a range of inspections and repairs on aircraft. In order to complete the repairs AMTs employ tools like wrenches, volt meters and hammers, clamps screwdrivers, wire cutters, among other. They are part of a team which includes pilots, aircraft engineers and part suppliers, as well as aircraft repair technicians, security personnel as well as aviation management. AMTs are employed in the private sector as well as for government agencies, which includes the military. Technicians must adhere to the relevant regulations for the work they do on aircraft. They are often outdoors and are exposed to the elements (such as cold or hot temperatures) for long durations of time.

AMTs must be certified by The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) (outside of military positions that have their own rules). FAA certification requires at minimum 18 years old and passing a series of tests within a 24 month period, and also being proficient in speaking the English language. Alongside FAA certification, it's typical for positions in the AMT field to require work experience that is relevant. Employers typically also require the capability to lift at least 50lbs, and to withstand exposure to chemicals and aviation fuels and climb and grip with hands and working under pressure.
