Description

Mechanical technicians (also referred to as simply mechanics) are responsible for preventative maintenance for their company’s machines and equipment They also inspect equipment to verify that it is safe to use, as well as make repairs as needed. When a breakdown occurs, mechanical technicians inspect and diagnose the underlying problem; they then determine if it is necessary to replace parts and or or how to repair the equipment as quickly and safely as possible. Mechanical technicians must keep detailed logs of maintenance and repairs, as well as use specialized tools to calibrate equipment and machines. They also maintain sufficient inventory of replacement parts and repair equipment.

Mechanical technicians need to have an excellent working knowledge of the design, layout, systems, and performance of the machines and equipment for which they are responsible. They must perform all tasks in compliance with company and government regulations (such as safety laws). Mechanical technicians need to be able to work independently, yet still maintain communication with all relevant departments to keep them informed of any potential problems, scheduled maintenance, and anticipated completion time for repairs.

A high school diploma or equivalent is typically the minimum educational requirement for mechanical technicians; some positions may require a relevant associate's degree, certification or specialized training through an accredited technical school, or military technical training. If required to provide maintenance in the field, a commercial driver’s license may be required if the mechanic must use large commercial-style vehicles to transport parts and equipment.
