A medical or clinical laboratory technician performs a number of tasks in a medical laboratory within a hospital or other independent medical laboratory setting; their primary focus is generally specimen collection, processing, and handling. The medical laboratory technician is expected to follow all rules and protocols at all times, ensuring quality control for all collected specimens. Medical laboratory technicians also read, understand, analyze, maintain, and record all test results. They also help identify and resolve inconsistencies in patient results after analyzing the reports.
Additionally, the medical laboratory technician must be (or become) proficient in operating and maintaining all relevant laboratory equipment. In addition, they run regular quality-control tests on the equipment to ensure the highest possible accuracy from the specimen testing procedures. The technician also diagnoses and fixes any issues that are found during the quality-control testing process. The medical laboratory technician must be proficient in clerical duties such as recording and reporting specimen data, compiling and submitting scheduled weekly and or or monthly reports, maintaining the file system, making copies, and other duties when needed.Work hours for this position are usually regular weekday shifts, with some on-call time scheduled for weekends and holidays as needed.
Medical laboratory technicians are usually required to have either an associate's or bachelor's degree in medical technology, life sciences, or a similar fields; certification as a clinical laboratory technician may be accepted in lieu of a university degree.
