Victim advocates assist victims of different crimes, typically victims of domestic violence and usually work for an organization that is non-profit or a an official government agency, like police departments.

Victim advocates collaborate with other groups like police officers and detectives to assist during times of crisis and sometimes it is necessary to assist victims in developing "exit strategies. Advocates can help provide temporary shelter to the victim and help them access medical assistance and typically be advocates for victims, and assist them in obtaining legal and community services when required. They can attend the court along with the victims to offer assistance and support, and they must be flexible for this job, since often work is performed on-call. Advocates for victims may also organize support groups or provide individual counseling. Public speaking skills are often required for public information to the community. Training in advocacy for domestic violence could also be required as the job might involve the creation of reports on matters like job activities and statistics, therefore they must be able to handle multiple instances at a time.

Communication skills that are both written and verbal abilities are required for this job, and a master's or bachelor's degree in the fields of counseling, sociology, or the social sciences are required by certain employers.
