Inventory planners are accountable to develop efficient plans for inventory management within their organizations. They create documents that provide the specifications for quantity of a company's product or equipment. They also create precise reports on the supply count and the materials. They also keep up-to-date files regarding inventory that is utilized or moved to prevent any possible errors, as well receiving returned equipment and maintain records of shipping. Inventory planners also log the inventory activities into databases of the company they complete daily transactions, connect them to relevant departments, and help managers with replenishing inventory tasks. They are required to actively participate in meetings of the company and suggest better ways to manage inventory levels and increase the efficiency of resources within the company.

Their main responsibility is to develop efficient strategies for managing different categories of products. Inventory planners also assign and distribute products and provide precise forecasts to ensure that the product is available. They evaluate the performance of products and recommend improvements to increase the profitability of their business, create financial plans that are based on the current trends and take part in workshops to determine the best space for optimization and improve productivity. In general, inventory planners report their performance to the manager of inventory within their department.

High school graduation or equivalent experience is usually required for this job. Experience in planning inventory could be a plus or demanded by employers. Inventory planners should have strong interpersonal skills and be able to communicate professionally to other inventory planners.
