An experienced senior policy analyst is responsible to ensure that both government and corporate policies have the desired outcomes and achieve minimal standards of effectiveness. Analysts are specialized project manager and typically evaluate the effectiveness of policies and programs (often ones implemented through the federal government). After identifying a policy or program to study, an analyst who is the top of their line creates an outline of the project, which outlines the data that must be collected and the metrics that must be evaluated. Once a plan is created, the policy manager assigns tasks to team members. This could include assembling a particular data set or evaluating how a particular system.

Once the data has been gathered after data is gathered, the senior policy analyst is responsible for an analysis using statistical methods in order to discover the trends that are evident and examine the hypothesis. The senior policy analyst creates an analysis of the effectiveness of the policy, its its weaknesses as well as strengths and suggestions to improve.
