Course Description

This course may also be taken as ECEA 5701, which is part of CU Boulder's Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.

This course introduces advanced concepts in switched-mode converter circuits. This course explains how power semiconductors are realized in inverters and converters with bidirectional power flow. The origins of the switching times and power diodes, power MOSFETs and IGBTs will be explained. The effects of switching loss are included in the equivalent circuit models. This paper describes and analyzes the discontinuous conduction mode. There are many well-known topologies of converter circuits, including those that have transformer isolation.

Assignments include a boost converter, an H-bridge converter used in a grid interfaced solar inverter systems, and transformer-isolated forward converters and flyback converters.

You will be able to:

* Learn how to use power semiconductor devices in a switch converter

* Be able to identify the source of discontinuous conduction mode, and solve converters that operate in DCM

* Learn the basics of dc/dc converter circuits and dc/ac inverter circuits

* Learn how to install transformer isolation in a DC-DC converter. This includes the most popular forward and flyback converter topologies.

The prerequisite is completion of the Introduction to Power Electronics course.
