Export Amazon RDS DB Snapshot to S3

This lab walks through how to export the RDS DB snapshot from RDS to S3.

This lab will allow you to practice creating an Amazon RDS DB Instance and Amazon S3 Bucket.

Time: 1 hour and 30 minutes

AWS Region: US East, N. Virginia us-east-1

Introduction

Any type of RDS Backup can be exported to S3, regardless of whether they are automated backups or manual backups.

Steps to export to the s3

We need to create an Amazon S3 bucket with the necessary IAM permissions, and a KMS key to enable server-side encryption (SSE).

You can export the Snapshot via console or CLI commands.

The Export is done in the background. It doesn't affect any database performance.

Data exported to S3 will always be in Apache Parquet format. Parquet is faster to export than test formats and takes up to 6x less storage in Amazon S3.

Other AWS services such as Amazon Sagemaker, Amazon EMR and Amazon Athena can analyze the exported data.
