This course will provide a deeper look into the roles and responsibilities that boards of directors have in governance of non-profit organizations. Although the course was designed with North American culture as a focus, we recognize that the roles and responsibilities for boards of directors in other countries may be different. We hope the course content will still have value for those from other countries.

Course 2 Overview
Week 1: This week's questions include: What role does the board play in planning for the future of an organization? Why is this important for non-profit organizations? What is strategic planning? And what can boards do to effectively carry it out?
Week 2: This week's question: What role does the board play in assessing the organization's performance? Why is it important to perform performance assessment? Many boards struggle to meet their performance assessment responsibilities.
Week 3: This week's question: What are the elements in the fundraising/resource-development process? What role does the board play in ensuring that the organization receives adequate funding? What information should be included in a resource-development plan?
Week 4: You will be asked to review the course material, complete a written assignment (also known as a BEAR or Board Effectiveness Readiness Assessment), then take two multiple-choice Readiness Assurance Tests (also called RATs). The one RAT will measure knowledge and comprehension, while the other will evaluate application of knowledge in a case.
Week 5: We encourage you to talk about the RATs in our discussion forums. If you have any questions, we will allow you to take them again.
