Course Description

Some people may find the IBM mainframe world full of legacy programs a little intimidating. It's not the limited ecosystem of programming in a Java or.Net environment. You may be asked to code a quick solution for a COBOL program because of a lack of resources. This ability could make you the "go-to guy" at an IBM "shop". This course, TSO/ISPF: Getting Started, will teach you what to do when given a specification. You'll first learn about the ISPF utilities. This will allow you to search for programs and then copy them to your project libraries. You'll then learn how to set up PF keys to hotkey from panel to panel and under different menus. Finally, you will be able to organize your workflow with the creation of test and staging libraries. You'll also learn how to use ISPF command line lines to edit your fixes, and keep your COBOL edits to a minimum. After completing this course, your skills and knowledge will allow you to fix COBOL programs, stage them in a way that is consistent with your standards, and perhaps you will discover why experienced COBOL programmers prefer the ISPF editor to do the job faster.

Skills You Will Gain

What You Will Learn

Learn what to do when you are given a specification

First, you’ll explore the ISPF utilities - where you will be able to search for the programs that you'll need to analyze and copy to your own project libraries for the fix

Next, you’ll discover how to set up PF keys so you can hot key from panel to panel, under different menus and organize your workflow by creating test and staging (PDS) libraries

Finally, you’ll learn how to use ISPF command lines and line commands to edit your fixes and limit your edits to just the few lines of COBOL

When you’re finished with this course, you’ll have the skills and knowledge needed to fix COBOL programs and stage the results in a manner that seasoned COBOL programmers would consider as consistent with their own standards and, perhaps, you will realize
