In 1944, the Great Depression of 1930s caused the establishment of the IMF. The IMF was founded by 44 countries that sought to establish a framework for international economic cooperation. Its membership now includes 190 countries and its staff is drawn from 150 countries. These 190 countries make up the IMF's near-global membership. The IMF is responsible for their governance.
