Description

Senior field engineers are responsible for all aspects of the planning, integration, and support of engineering products. This involves the planning and installation of an engineering product into a client’s existing system, solving all associated technical problems, and ensuring overall function. Once products are in place, senior field engineers maintain and service them according to their users’ needs; they may replace and upgrade existing products as well.

Senior field engineers are responsible for continual analysis of a company’s engineering products to ensure quality control and proper function. If a failure occurs in the field, they must determine the cause and make recommendations for updates or corrections in the manufacturing process. They must be familiar with the entirety of the fabrication process of their products to ensure proper delivery of a working product. They may be involved in conceptualization, design, fabrication, and/or testing of a product to properly install, maintain, and analyze its use in the field. Senior field engineers are also responsible for the field team’s adherence to the contract budget.

Senior field engineers work in a manufacturing plant during design and fabrication processes. They work in the field in whatever situation the client requires during the installation and maintenance processes. They may work in an office environment with other engineers during concept design phases, manipulating plans and computer drawings.

Senior field engineers are required to hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering, although some employers accept equivalent experience in lieu of a degree. Employers may require security clearance for specific job sites and tasks. Additionally, they may require extensive experience (six to 10 years minimum in many cases), as this is position involves leadership over a field team of engineers and workers during the installation and maintenance processes.
