Description

Senior IC layout engineers hold a rather technical position which requires specialized skills and years of experience. These senior engineers are extremely detail-oriented and experienced with the wide range of small parts used in electronics.

IC stands for "integrated circuit," and the primary function of this position involves setting up circuitry within electrical and computer networks. This requires the use of a range of components, including semiconductors, microprocessors, computer memory such as RAM, and others. Senior IC layout engineers must ensure that circuit layouts work at optimal speed and performance and risk of hazards, such as network crashes, are minimized. Ensuring that the network can handle its maximum potential traffic is also of the utmost importance.

As senior engineers, they must be able to work with, and lead, a team of engineers, so leadership and interpersonal skills are essential for this position. At least ten years of experience and a master's degree in a relevant electronic or engineering field are generally required, and this position can be found in a wide range of businesses which maintain large electrical and computer networks, especially where the use and/or supply of electricity is controlled directly by computers.

Those in this position usually work traditional business hours Monday through Friday, and time is often split between an office desk and electronics laboratory. Much of the work is spent with or on computers, including using them and working with their inner components. Senior IC layout engineers must be able to micro- and macro-manage the tools they use because, while they work with very small electronics, their networks require them to look beyond such small components to anything and everything to which the network is connected.

Roles & Responsibilities

As a Senior IC Layout Engineer with 6-9 years of experience in Singapore, your main responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to interpret and implement circuit design requirements accurately. This involves working closely with design engineers to understand and translate their schematic designs into physical layouts.
  • Developing and optimizing layout methodologies to enhance productivity and quality. You are responsible for continuously improving the layout design process and implementing best practices to achieve efficient and high-quality results.
  • Performing physical verification, such as DRC, LVS, and ERC, to ensure layout compliance with design rules and specifications. It is your duty to verify that the layout meets the required industry standards and guidelines to guarantee proper functionality.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior layout engineers.

Qualifications & Work Experience

For a Senior IC Layout Engineer job role, the following qualifications are required:

  • Extensive experience in IC layout design, including proficiency in industry-standard layout tools such as Cadence Virtuoso or Synopsys Custom Compiler.
  • In-depth knowledge of semiconductor processes, layout design principles, and design rule checks (DRC) to ensure the layout meets the electrical and manufacturing requirements.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to layout design, such as parasitic extraction, metal density, and signal integrity.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication abilities to work closely with cross-functional teams, including design engineers, verification engineers, and process engineers, to deliver high-quality IC layouts.
