Description

An operations director manages the overall output of a group of workers that form an organization. The role is a generalized position that requires an ability to adapt to different issues in different departments. Typically, the operations director is heavily involved in financial planning and project schedule supervision. This includes planning for an annual budget, setting financial goals, and ensuring that everybody is on board with changes by working closely with the human resources department. An operations director works effectively not by infringing upon the management of individual projects where a manager is already assigned, but by supervising and making necessary changes to resolve issues that cannot be resolved by the departments internal solutions setup.

In the office setting, the operations director spends most of their time in contact with the accounting or financing department to ensure that payroll and project budgets (among other things) are on track and free of problems. However, it is common for an operations manager to work with any other department that requires input to boost efficiency. Working as a middle man, the project manager consults with managers and owners to resolve problems.

Due to the financial management that is associated with this position, nearly all employers require a demonstrated ability to both understand business finances and manage people and problems effectively. It also is essential to have a certain number of years' experience with bookkeeping and working at a high position with an accounting department.
