Hospital pharmacists dispense medicines in a hospital environment. In some positions, they make rounds in order to dispense medicine to in-patients, and it is also common to prepare solutions for things such as IVs and chemotherapy. If changes in patients' conditions are noticed, these pharmacists will have the discretion to relay them to the patient’s medical provider. It is important to be able to communicate clearly with other medical staff so that the best care can be administered, and medical professionals should always be informed about medication details as soon as possible.
Strong communication skills are important in this position in order to explain terms in an understandable manner to patients. Hospital pharmacists should also be able to explain the use, dosage amounts, and allergy/side effect information to patients. Basic computer skills are necessary in order to carry out tasks such as data entry to enter patient and dispensing information. It is also important to be proficient with both manual and automated dispensing techniques.
All duties should be carried out in accordance with local and federal laws and regulations for pharmaceutical practices and the employer. Both part-time and full-time positions are available; hours may vary, and late-night or weekend hours may occasionally be required, as this work is carried out in a hospital environment where pharmacists are always needed. Some employers will accept those with a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy, while others require a doctorate degree.
