Course Description

Our world is polarized, and people often talk past one another. Do you know when to believe the opinions of others? How quick should you accept what someone tells you is true? What should you look out for when assessing the trustworthiness of someone? What should we do if we have disagreements with others who appear to be equals? What should we do if and when we disagree with others? How can the evidence help us decide the best response? These issues may be particularly important for those involved in religious disputes. What evidence should be weighed against each other?

These questions are being investigated by experts in education, philosophy, theology, and psychology. The results can be applied to real-world situations. People often dismiss or marginalize those who disagree with them when confronted with difficult questions. It is possible to be extremely polarizing and even dangerous when there are moral and political disagreements. Whether it's Christian extremism or Islamic extremism or militant atheism - religious dialogue is still coloured by arrogance and dogma. People need to be more open to both the arguments for and against their beliefs and to the possibility of their moral, religious, or political beliefs being wrong. More intellectual humility is needed in the world.

This course. We will be looking at the following questions regarding intellectual humility.

* Do you believe the opinions of others?

* How do we deal with disagreement?

* What role does evidence play in the resolution of religious disputes?

Lectures are given by top specialists. The course is structured around interesting readings and practical assignments that will help you to address humility issues in your everyday life.

This course is part of a series that explores the science, theory and applied issues surrounding intellectual humbleness. We have already discussed how to measure intellectual humility, intellectual virtue, and whether one can be born humble. Also, what emotions and cognition can tell us about intellectual humility. To gain a deeper understanding of this fascinating topic, you can take all three courses. You can find:
