A food safety specialist, commonly known as a "food inspector," is responsible for assessing and monitoring food quality and safety for the public. These specialists may work in a variety of environments, including food labs, offices, restaurants, grocery stores, and places where food is manufactured.Applicants are generally required to have a bachelor’s degree in food sciences or a related field, and some positions may require a master’s degree. Some employers may require professional certification in food safety, as well. Ongoing education will occur, as new products and foods are developed constantly and the field is growing and changing rather rapidly. This is a full-time position which generally requires these specialists to work daytime hours with some overtime required.Depending on the organization, a food safety specialist may have a variety of responsibilities, including: conducting workplace safety evaluations; identifying areas of improvement; implementing management plans; forming close working relationships with other food professionals (growers, vendors, harvesters, transporters, suppliers, etc.); verifying food safety compliance; performing food safety tests and providing resulting data and analyses; ensuring regulations in regards to food safety; coordinating with product management; investigating health code violations; attending training programs related to product research and development; ensuring product quality; and upgrading product quality and safety.
