Description

A material handler for warehouses is a member of a team that performs a variety of tasks that are essential to keep an organized warehouse. In the shipping aspect of warehouse operations the material handler takes orders and utilizes the forklift to lift pallets to fulfill orders. Once the pallet has been retrieved then the material handler puts it in a storage area to be transferred onto the truck to be shipped. Then the material handler will update the system of the company to inform that the delivery is on track.

The primary task of the Warehouse material handler's job is to help get the merchandise off of shipping trucks to the warehouse. The materials handler communicates with the driver of the truck and Warehouse system in order to determine the items that need to be removed and when. During this process the material handler notifies any deviations from the planned shipment and records the information in the warehouse's tracking system. After completing paperwork for the merchandise's acceptance, the material handler begins taking off the vehicle, a procedure which can be done using electronic dollies or forklifts. Once the goods have been removed from the truck and the material handler constructs and secures, then labels the pallets. The material handler uses a forklift to lift the pallet, transport it to a storage area and note within the system of warehouses of the place of the pallet, to ensure that it is quickly retrieved.

Material handlers in warehouses may require the completion of a graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience working in a warehouse setting could be an advantage.
