Institute Overview

Founded in 1817, before Michigan had even become a state, the University of Michigan was one of the first research universities in the US. Initially set up in Detroit, the campus was shifted to Ann Arbor in 1837. UMich's alumni body is the largest out of all universities globally and has a history of student activism. 

It offers 250 majors at the undergraduate level, 200 at postgraduate and 100 at doctoral. The university offers degrees in social science, STEM and humanities, with Economics, Business and Information Science being the popular majors. UMich offers professional degrees in law, pharmacy, social work, architecture, business, dentistry and medicine. It has one of the most significant research budgets of any US university and has research centers for different fields. The university values its clubs and societies, over 1400 in number. Several organizations are also devoted to social causes and to forge smaller communities.
Moreover, UMich athletes have established a name for themselves by winning more than 150 medals and even partaking in the Olympics. 

UMich has ranked 23 on the QS World University Rankings for 2022, with high scores in Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation and Faculty-Student Ratio. It also ranked 26 on the Graduate Employability ranking by QS Top Universities. Based on US News Rankings, it is at 24 in National Universities, 3 in Top Public Universities and 13 in Most Innovative Schools. Furthermore, Times Higher Education places UMich at 22nd place in the World University Rankings and 23rd place in US College rankings. 


According to Niche, 93% of students graduate. The Alumni tend to earn a starting salary of $49,800 p.a. The star-studded alumni group is filled with well-known names from every field like Larry Page, Michael Phelps, Madonna, Arthur Miller and Tom Brady.
