Description

Product design engineers are responsible for all aspects of the creation and development of new products, as well as the maintenance and updating of current product lines. Using client requirements and established industry practices, they design and develop new products. This process involves several stages. First, ideas are generated and a prototype is created. Then feedback is generated from other engineers and the client, and further development occurs. Once an acceptable final design of the product is developed, product design engineers are responsible for creating all necessary documentation related to the use of and specifications for the product; this documentation is extremely important for proper use and safety concerns. In addition to creating new products, they also maintain current product lines by suggesting and implementing improvements to designs and manufacturing processes. In all of their design capacities, product design engineers are responsible for meeting established safety regulations of their company, industry, and government.

Product design engineers work in a mix of environments. They may spend time on a manufacturing floor reviewing and establishing processes. They work directly in the shop on prototypes and finished products. They also work in an office environment, meeting with clients and other engineers.

Product design engineers are required to hold a bachelor’s degree in mechanical or civil engineering or a related field. They work with both computers and machine tool in the design and creation phases. Some certification to operate certain equipment may be required, depending on the industry regulations. In addition to their degree, product design engineers are often required to have several years' experience in engineering and design work.
