Customs compliance managers are charged with a variety of duties and are responsible for providing direction and advice to the senior management team to ensure the compliance of current customs laws that are essential to the implementation of U.S. government regulations such as the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), Export Administration Regulations (EAR), U.S Customs and Border Protection Regulations, as well as the Office of Foreign Asset Controls (OFAC).

Customs compliance managers are accountable of coordinating various internal assets of the company to obtain all necessary U.S export and import licenses from the government permit, authorizations for release, and determinations of jurisdictions for commodities. They also work with internal and external organizations to coordinate the import and export of various goods and services and also with authorities to ensure the compliance. They also have to ensure the correct application of trade laws as well as managing an export/import program inside the facilities.

Customs compliance managers have to implement the necessary procedures of their company to ensure compliance with trade regulations and examine requests for the export or import of controlled products and services. They can also determine and design any training requirements in connection with the process of export or import and determine any issues related to the compliance of export/import laws through audits and evaluations. They can also act as empowered officials when submitting request for export authorisation to Department of State Directorate of Defense Trade Controls.
