Preparing for the Workplace of the Future with this Future Learn's Course

Course Overview

Building Your Career in Tomorrow's Workplace - FutureLearn is a self-paced certification course by the University of Exeter, made available by FutureLearn, which will help you in preparing for the workplace of the future. It will help you understand the different factors shaping the future workplace and how to keep up with these advancements and adapt accordingly.

The instructors explain the curriculum by beautifully structuring the concepts, taking us through them part by part, connecting the dots, and extrapolating them to the future. The instructors include Lisa Harris, Director of Digital Learning at the Business School at the University of Exeter, and her colleague Alison Truelove. They were joined by mentors Max Walkowiak (M.Sc. Alumnus) and Millie Britton (undergraduate student and Digital Learning Assistant).

"The course is structured really well to give you an insight into the workplace culture; right from the past to the future."

Course Structure

It takes around 2 weeks to complete the course with 4 hours of weekly work. In the first few weeks, the history of workplaces and the structures which are still undergoing transformation were taught. The past methods were then discussed with respect to the current changes, and the current dynamics of the workplaces around the world were highlighted.

In the relationship between the past and the present, methods were used to extrapolate into the future. The course also helped provide guidance and a plethora of useful resources to scale up and prepare students for the workplace in the future. There are assessments at the right intervals after the completion of the week’s syllabus, which is essential to actively recall what we learned in that week.

The study materials that are provided throughout the week are enough to successfully attempt the assessments. The course is structured really well to give you an insight, all the way from the beginning to the future of the workplace. You don’t need to have any prerequisites to begin this course.

Insider Tips

In order to make the best out of this course, I have included some important tips below that I think you might find useful.

Stay Curious

This course requires you to think beyond the present and understand changes in the workplace. The workplace culture we have now is different from the one we had a decade ago. Similarly, there is a pretty good chance that workplace cultures a decade from now will be different than the ones we have now. It is important that we understand that while preparing for change in the workplace, we can follow different ways. It especially helps as the possible ways of adapting to changing workplace cultures are discussed throughout the course.

Staying curious and being able to differentiate between models that help predict what the workplace of the future will look like will help you get the best out of this course.

Keep an Open Mind

Now, I completely understand how hard it is to adapt to the ever-changing workplace but keeping an open mind and embracing those changes will be beneficial to you in the long run as opposed to rejecting how things work now just because it is different from the system you were brought into and trained for.

Final Take

The pandemic made me introspect and birthed in me a desire to explore the future and familiarize myself with it in a structured and systematic way.  After a bit of research, I zeroed in on this course. The interesting subtopics within the course and the FutureLearn certificate offered me enough motivation to complete it.

I am currently working as a Senior Executive at Vivo Mobile India Private Limited. My current job demands a lot of strategic planning and innovative ideas. The tips and guidance from this course help me in my day-to-day tasks. I also believe it will help me navigate through various challenges that could arise in my workplace in the future.

The study of the changing dynamics of the workplace and the beautiful construction of the earlier models form a solid foundation to build or predict the future. Change is inevitable, and it is sweeping inside workplace culture at a fast pace. Everyone needs to keep up with changing technologies and try to understand them. Lifelong learning is the key to staying on track, so this course is not just relevant in 2022, but will stay relevant years into the future!
