Computer Science: Algorithms, Theory, and Machines

The course is designed to introduce the wider discipline of computer science to those with a basic knowledge in Java programming. This course covers the second part of Computer Science: An Interdisciplinary Approach. The first half will be covered in Computer Science with a Purpose's Coursera Course. We aim to simplify computation and raise awareness of the rich intellectual history and substantial intellectual underpinnings of computer science. We then introduce classical theoretical models which allow us to answer fundamental questions such as intractability, universality and computability. The final part of the article will cover machine architecture, including machine-language programming in relation to Java coding and logic design.

This course focuses on the relationship between application programming and theory of computation. It also covers the history of computing, evolution and Boole's contributions, as well as the role of Turing, Turing and von Neumann.
