Course Description

University of California San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences Drug Commercialization Course offers lectures by industry professionals and faculty. This course is recorded on campus at UCSD and aims to share the expertise of top experts in drug commercialization.

This course covers pharmacoeconomics, marketing strategy and intellectual property strategy, portfolio management and strategic alliances. The course will include a case study on startup success.

The course will also discuss Phase 4 and post-marketing clinical trials. These trials are done after a drug is approved by regulatory agencies and launched. These studies involve the use of the new drug in a daily healthcare setting with a larger number of patients. This allows for new uses of the drug, as well as comparisons with other treatments. It also allows for the determination of clinical effectiveness in a larger number of patients and the possibility of rare side effects.

To ensure that the needs of the market are considered in the drug's development, pre-marketing strategies should be developed as soon as Phase 1 clinical trials have ended. The marketing strategy will be refined during later phases, when the clinical results will be presented at international medical conferences. This is to increase awareness among the medical community that will be prescribing this drug. A tactical plan, pricing strategy, and marketing strategy will all be created. The sales team will also be trained in the promotion of the drug and how to promote it to pharmacists, physicians, and nurses once the product has been approved.

It is highly recommended that you take all three courses together. This will help you gain a better understanding of how drugs are discovered in the laboratory, tested in clinical trials, and launched on the market.
