Course Description

Drawing technical fashion flats is one of the most valuable skills you can have as a fashion designer. These flats show the garment's proportions and material breakdown. You will be able to draw technical flats, which will greatly improve your fashion design communication skills, whether you are designing for fun or trying to increase your value as an artist for any fashion house.

Marc Jacobs taught me how to draw flats in the early stages of my career. I still use this method every day when I am creating collections for my men'swear label. Although this style of fashion drafting is considered "old-fashioned", drawing technical fashion flats byhand is something I ensure all my designers, from the senior level to the interns, are proficient in.

What You Will Learn

Your drawing ability is your language as a designer. It is how you communicate your ideas to customers and colleagues. Through the use of technical flats, this class will help you to clearly illustrate your fashion designs in a natural and professional manner. We'll cover:

  • Sketching Initial Concepts. Sketch exploration is a way to get your initial concepts down on paper.

  • Drawing Proper Measurements. How you can create a more precise, proportional sketch by using vellum paper over a croquis or "sloper".

  • Defining Details. How do you include the top stitch and detail to show construction of the garment?

  • Rendering using Markers. How to use different shades of grey to show material breakdown for the garment.

  • Creating Layouts. How do you create a full-scale technical drawing on paper of your design? To analyze proportions and construction.

What You Will Make

As a project, you will create three technical flats that represent the lessons we are learning in class. You will have the chance to share your work with other students enrolled in the class at each stage of your project to get feedback and high-fives for your amazing work. I look forward to seeing your work!
