Course Description

The IC engine has become a standard part of everyday life. More vehicles are on the roads today than ever before. These vehicles are common, but they emit harmful emissions. The EPA, or Environment Protection Agency, estimates that the global transportation industry is responsible for almost 14% of greenhouse gas emissions. This is why IC Engines are being refined to make them more fuel-efficient. However, IC Engines are at a point in their development where further research and development are impossible. Daimler, Mercedes Benz' parent company, claimed that it has stopped further development of IC Engines. The company is focusing on electric vehicles. Electric vehicles have their merits, however. These were the main reasons for the Hybrid Electric Vehicles. The Hybrid Vehicles combine the best of both worlds. These vehicles come with an IC engine drivetrain as well as an electric drivetrain.

This course is intended to cover all the basic knowledge required to understand HEV development before you dive into it.

This course will teach you about

  • Introduction to HEVs - This video will introduce you to HEVs. Let's answer the question: What are HEVs? Why do we use HEVs? What are the classifications for HEVs?
  • Introduction to battery electric vehicles and batteries- This video will describe the classifications of Electric Vehicles. Next, we will discuss the definition of Battery Electric Vehicles and why they are important. We will then discuss the concept Degree Of Hybridisation (DOH) and explain how lithium-ion battery work.
  • Understanding parallel, series-parallel and series-parallel HEVs. Here we explain what a Powertrain is, and give an in-depth explanation about the classification of HEVs using Powertrain.
  • The objectives of simulation and modeling- This brief discussion will explain what simulation and modeling are. Then, we will discuss the different types of simulations.
  • Introduction to GT-SUITE - This video will introduce you to the GT-SUITE GUI.
  • P0P4 hybrid electric car simulation model - This video will explain the different templates used in the model. The parameters that were used to create the templates will be explained. We will then modify the drive cycle conditions of the model and prepare it for simulation.
  • Analyse of simulation results and conclusion - In this video we will run the simulation for the 1D model, and then have a discussion about the results.
