Course Description

Safety and security are among the top issues in modern times. Cyber-crime and terrorism have a profound impact on the daily lives of many millions around the world. They are also high up on the list of international organisations, politicians and business. These issues are also prominent in public consciousness and in government policies. Security challenges in today's interconnected world are increasingly complicated. Globalization and the rise of hyper-connected and networked technologies have made it easier to create new security and safety challenges that impact all levels. This has a dramatic effect on their complexity and size. Solutions to current security problems require multiple actors at different levels of governance.

This course introduces you to security and safety in an ever-changing world. We will work together to answer important questions such as: What is safety and security? What can be done to understand modern security and safety issues? How can we address such problems? The course integrates scholarly inquiry across multiple disciplines, including terrorism studies, crisis management and medical science, with real-life case studies to help you understand and solve complex security and safety issues.
