California Institute of the Arts, also known as CalArts, is a private university for artists located in Santa Clarita (California). It was founded in 1961 and is the first institution to grant a degree in higher education in the United States. Through its six schools, it offers Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees, as well as Master of Fine Arts and Master of Arts degrees.
Many benefactors first imagined the school in the 1960s. It was staffed with a variety of professionals, including Walt Disney, Thornton Ladd, Thorbert Chouinard, Lulu Von Hagen and Nelbert Chouinard. CalArts students create their own work and retain copyright in a workshop environment.
