NIT Manipur was established in the year 2010 from its temporary campus at Government Polytechnic situated in Takyelpat, Imphal, with only three branches in the field of engineering, namely, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, and Communication Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering. National Institute of Technology has been shifted to its permanent campus located in Langol, Imphal in Manipur. The university has added two more engineering branches after 2013-2014 like Civil Engineering and Mechanical engineering. The varsity is constructed on a spacious area of 341.5 acres of land and is well-equipped with all the modern facilities and infrastructure.
NIT Manipur has secured 114th rank in NIRF Engineering Ranking 2021 as compared to NIRF Ranking 2020, wherein it secured 158th position in the engineering category. 50% of seats in NIT Manipur have been reserved for the students residing in Manipur, while the other 50% are reserved for students belonging to other states. The different programmes that are offered by the National Institute of Technology, Manipur are B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc., and Ph.D. Scholarship and placement opportunities are also provided by the National Institute of Technology Manipur.
The university is currently functioning from its permanent campus situated in Langol, Imphal. One can reach the university by local transportation like taxi, and auto-rickshaw services are available. The university can also be reached by taking a bus service, which is approximately 3-4 km away from the varsity. The nearest railway station to Imphal is Dimapur, which is at a distance of about 210 km from the university. There are no railway facilities that directly connect Imphal to other stations; one can take a bus to Dimapur railway station and then travel further through railways. The nearest airport is the Imphal National Airport, which connects many metropolitan cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Hyderabad. One can reach the university from Guwahati, Aizawl, and Silchar also by taking a bus that connects to the NH 38 highway.
The NIT Manipur allows the students to enjoy indoor and outdoor sports facilities. The institute also provides the required equipment to play different spots, both indoor and outdoor. The sports club of NIT Manipur also encourages the students to perform better in sports.
