The university was established in 1962 by an act passed by the West Bengal government. The University of North Bengal is also known as NBU Siliguri. The campus of the university is spread over an area of 315.99 acres of land. NBU Siliguri is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with grade A. The university is also recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
