Bocconi University in Milan was founded in 1902 with a generous endowment by Ferdinando Bocconi (a wealthy merchant). Universita Commerciale Luigi Bocconi was named after his son and became the first Italian higher education institution to award a degree in Economics.
Bocconi stands for liberalism and pluralism since its inception. Bocconi is a private university, but it has always been more than a top university. It actively supports the education of deserving and disadvantaged students and has promoted equality of opportunity for its many generations. According to Leopoldo Sabbatini (its first Rector and President), Bocconi's mission was "promote harmony among school and life."
Bocconi today is an international research university in law, economics and business. Research projects at Bocconi are supported by both national and supranational institutions. Bocconi is a key node within the European and global networks of economics and business universities. It exchanges faculty with American and European universities. Bocconi maintains close relationships with international corporations and their officials. He also interacts regularly with the business and economic environment in order to evaluate new issues, develop new techniques, or start new research projects.
Bocconi University offers an Undergraduate School as well as a Graduate School and a School of Law. The SDA Bocconi School of Management was established in 1971 and provides post-experience management education.
Bocconi offers Bachelor, Master of Science and PhD degrees in Management and Economics. Bocconi also offers many post-experience programs and hundreds of advanced courses for managers and professionals in every area of private and public management.

This includes promoting cultural progress, international trade, and economic integration. Bocconi views higher education as a continuous, ongoing process that extends throughout a person's professional life. Bocconians are encouraged to develop their analytical skills and ethics so they can be a part of the development and innovation of European business and society.
