The National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM), Thanjavur run by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India is located on the Pudukkottai Road, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. The institute was earlier named as the Paddy Processing Research Centre in 1972. Later, when it was re-located at Thanjavur, the institute was renamed as the Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology, in February 2008. Finally, the institute has been renamed as National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management, Thanjavur. As per NIRF rankings, the institute has been ranked 81st among engineering institutions in 2021, while, the university was ranked 74th in NIRF Ranking 2020.
The NIFTEM Thanjavur, Tamil Naidu focuses on solving problems related to dairy, farming, fishing and other food-related issues by conducting thorough and in-depth research and giving solutions that are based on the development of the food industry. The Quality and Testing Laboratory of the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management, Thanjavur is accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The institute is installed with the most modern equipment used in Food Processing and Food Technology. The institute also has constructed a food-processing incubation cum training centre for students to get comprehensive knowledge of new food processing technologies. The food processing incubation cum training centre also acts as a research centre for students who want to develop new and sustainable food development technologies. The National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management, Thanjavur currently offers three programmes, Bachelor's of Technology, Master's of Technology and Ph.D programmes in various specialisations.
