The institute was established in the year 1956 under the Government of India. Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry is also known as JIPMER. In the year 2008, JIPMER Puducherry was declared as an “Institution of National Importance” under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India by an Act of Parliament, JIPMER, Puducherry. The super-specialty block, the trauma care centre and the auditorium of JIPMER was inaugurated by the former President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam along with Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss in 2008. The campus of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research is spread over 192 acres and has a well-developed infrastructure and modern amenities. With a faculty strength of 326 members and 1571 students enrollment, JIPMER Puducherry offers a total of 88 courses in the streams of medicine and allied sciences, sciences, pharmacy, arts, humanities and social sciences. The institute has been placed at the 8th position in the medical category by the NIRF for the year 2021.
