National Dairy Research Institute was established in 1923 in Bangalore as Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying. The institute was renamed as National Dairy Research Institute in 1947. In 1955, National Dairy Research Institute was shifted to Karnal. The campus is spread over a campus size of 1348 acres. NDRI Karnal is approved by the University Grants Commission. The institute has a faculty size of 153 members and 529 total students. National Dairy Research Institute Karnal offers a total of 31 courses.
