Osaka University (also known as the University of Osaka) is a Japanese public research university. It is located in Osaka Prefecture. It was once one of Japan's Imperial Universities. Now, it is a Designated National University and is listed as a Top Type university in the Top Global University Project. It is frequently ranked alongside the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University and University of Tokyo among Japan's top three public universities. It is ranked third among Japanese universities, and 75th globally in the 2022 QS World University Rankings. Osaka University was founded in 1931 and is one of the most modern universities in Japan. The history of Osaka University includes many older predecessors, such as the Kaitokuda established in 1724 and Tekijuku established in 1838. Many prominent scientists and scholars have worked or studied at Osaka University. These include Nobel Laureate in Physics Hideki Yokawa, manga artist Osamu Tzuka, Lasker Award winner Hidesabura Hannafusa and Ryatara Shiba. Shimon Sakaguchi was also a discoverer of regulatory cells.
