Specialists in assistive technology are accountable for providing health-related technical support and typically work with children, seniors, those with disabilities, and people who have disabilities. Their main responsibilities are reviewing the needs of clients and determining what types of technology are most appropriate for them within their specific settings; providing training related to technology for clients; putting in equipment; advising clients, allowing them to select from a variety of alternatives; arranging informative seminars for their clients; and making sure that their work is in line with the guidelines of their employers.

The majority of those in this job work in hospitals or other medical settings during regular working hours. However, they may be required to travel to other locations to offer consultation. They're usually working on their feet most of the time, but are also at their desks or computer for conducting research for potential clients.

Candidates for this job should hold a bachelor's degree or a master's level degree in special education. They must also be able to adjust to the latest technology and conduct continuous research to meet the needs of their clients. They must also possess excellent writing and verbal communication abilities, along with their automobile when light traveling is required.
