Course Description

This course allows students to create their own public art interventions or learn from recent public history. This course was designed by Pedro Lasch (artist and Duke professor) and taught by Nato Thompson, Creative Time's artistic director. It focuses on public culture and contemporary art. Lectures link the major advances of recent decades with wider topics such as spatial politics, everyday structures and experimental education. Tania Bruguera and Claire Doherty are among the speakers. Hans Haacke and Shannon Jackson also give presentations. Rick Lowe and Rick Lowe provide additional insight and advice. Participants and learners are encouraged, as the MOOCa title suggests, to view the MOOCa itself as public art. The courseas practice components, local productions and global exchanges are all examples of this.

Although no art experience is necessary, advanced students can still benefit from challenging projects.
