Course Description

Are you one of those people who love pattern? Maybe you've seen beautiful patterns on wallpaper or on the upholstery of a striking sofa or pillow and wondered how they were made. Perhaps you have tried to make a damask or a repeat medallion pattern, but were unable to get it right. Do you feel like this? Scallop repeating patterns may seem complicated. But, like all things, if you break it down, and figure out a way you can automate parts, you'll find that it's not too difficult. My course Delicious Scallops: Automation to Produce Pattern Layout Templates,is a collection of everything I have learned about scallop pattern making through hours of practice and improvement using my own technique. This course focuses on the scallop shape and includes the bonus of creating a template that you can use for hundreds more repeating patterns designs.

I'll also show you my step-by-step process, from planning your scallop, creating the final repeat in Illustrator to creating the template with transforms, and finally applying the pattern to mockups. Don't worry! It's not difficult!

This class will be focused on creating patterns using transformed elements. This means that you will only need one scallop to create, and Illustrator will do all of the repeat work in a LIVE manner. As you create the first scallop, you will see the repeat of your motifs. I recommend that you have some knowledge in pattern-making and the desire to learn more techniques. We'll discuss both the technical and design aspects of reflected repetitions in class. We will discuss design theory that enhances and reinforces scallop shapes. I will demonstrate the Illustrator software engines that allow for transformation and live transformation. Although I will be using Illustrator, it is the concepts that are most important. These concepts could be easily applied in other software.

You will need a method to create your motifs for class. A vector-based draw program is recommended. Corel DRAW and Affinity Designer are two examples. You will need to know how to create or import vector drawn motifs, reflect them, and then move them. Although some steps may seem complicated, I will show them at a slow pace so it is easy to follow. This course is not for beginners. I recommend that you have some knowledge of Illustrator and the basics of creating pattern repeats.

Adobe Illustrator is recommended for this class.

I will be including the following key concepts:

  • Review of my techniques for creating the first scallop template
  • Good examples that have a goal in sight
  • Automate with Actions and Transformations
  • There are many approaches that you can use in your creative work

This course is great no matter what purpose you have for the pattern. Get started and you'll be able to use your knowledge immediately in art practice.

Are you ready to create intricate scallop designs with a re-usable template and other creative skills? After you've completed this course, you will be able to create intricate scallop designs and a reusable template. We don't need to waste anymore time yakking! Let's get on with it!

Intro:

This brief introduction will give you a general overview of the class.

Lesson 1 - Template and Document Setup

This lesson will explain how I set up the scallop shape and my inspiration. I will show you the entire pattern collection I am using to make this coordinate and explain my process.

Lesson 2 - Transformation Settings for Auto Repeat

This lesson will cover methods that can be used to automate the process for designing repeating patterns in tile. First, we will create the "reflect", then move on to the "move" transformation. This allows us to repeat our scallop in 5 different positions to fill the swatch. This will allow you to view changes in "real time". This is a great way to create symmetry and good design.

Lesson 3 - Finalizing and Testing the Transform

This lesson will show you how to test your transformation. I will also explain important concepts. This lesson is full of helpful tips and tricks.

Lesson 4 - Using the Template to Arrange MOTIFs

This lesson will teach you how to arrange the motifs in a pleasing manner. You will learn many tips and tricks, as well as the theory behind pattern design. We will be focusing on design considerations that can help reinforce the scallop shape.

Lesson 5: Layout Finessing

This stage is where we begin to put together our pattern and prepare ourselves for the next step, which is finishing the scallop and repeating the central nonsymmetrical elements. We are getting closer to testing our repeated!

Lesson 6 - Finalizing the Scallop

This is the final step before we move on to testing our repeat! We will use techniques such as the envelope wrap to finess. We will also discuss color choices and other design considerations.

Lesson 7 - Testing Different Color Combinations

We will continue to repeat the main elements in this lesson and prepare to finalize our color choices. We will explore different combinations and discuss the implications of using a background with a scallop shape or eliminating it entirely. Illustrator actions are also useful for this type of pattern design.

Lesson 8 - Showing off Our Patterns

Two ways to export your assets with final color choices are shown. First, we create large samples of the different colors and then use the asset export panel for high-resolution files to export to our mockups. Second, we create individual swatches for each color option. We then open them in Photoshop and save them as Photoshop Patterns. You can then choose to use the original exported swatch assets, or create fill layers with each pattern. Then you can play with the scale in Photoshop. At this point, we complete two mockups: one that creates a group with a Mask and one that uses a Smart Object.

Outro

We will end this lesson with a discussion about the next steps.
