Course Description

This course will cover the basics of news writing in all its forms. Although we will be primarily focusing on newspaper writing, there will also be information about news on television, radio, magazines and the Internet.

We will discuss the various types of news articles, including columns, reviews, interviews and hard news. Students will learn how to structure news stories in the classic inverted pyramid format. This will be useful for writing in all media.

Journalistic writing requires a certain skill set. It must be done with speed and competency. It is important to be punctual. Students will learn how to read the facts, create a leade and meet deadlines.

Students will be provided with a project at the end of the course that helps them identify news stories and dissect their structure.
