Are you an illustrator or artist who works in traditional media and is interested in surface pattern design. Are you an artist who works in traditional mediums such as watercolors, gouache, or sketches with color pencils? If so, then you might be interested in learning how to convert your art into digital media for commercial use as surface repeats. Today's class will show you how to digitize and transform traditional artwork into surface pattern designs with Affinity Photo for iPad. You don't have to work with traditional media. I will show you how I transform traditional artwork into digital art that retains its handmade look.
Hello everyone! Welcome to my first class! Welcome back if you are returning student! Jen, my name is Jen, and I will guide you through this creative course. I am a freelance illustrator, graphic designer and educator from the midwest. I also run Bella + Sophia Creative Studio. You can learn more about me on my YouTube channel The Creative Studio. You will see my creative work as an educator and freelancer, as well as access a vast library of free tutorials related to art, design, and illustration. I believe in sharing knowledge in accessible ways. I have found that online courses and places such as Youtube are great places to do this. They allow me to connect with a wide range of people who are looking to learn and grow.
Today's class will explore the creative space where digital art meets traditional art. Although I prefer to work digitally, watercolor and other traditional art mediums such as paint, graphite, and color pencils are my favorite. If you prefer to work by hand, you can convert your pieces of art to digital format for commercial projects or other projects that require digital files. This is possible by creating surface pattern repeats. We will walk you through the process of scanning your artwork, preparing it for use in a repeat, and how to export the final file.
If this is your first class in surface pattern design, I recommend you make sure to check out my past courses. They cover everything from the basics that show you how to design from concept to final pattern, to more advanced topics that teach you how to create specific repeats such as half-drop patterns or specific styles like quatrefoil. This class is focused on Affinity apps for iPad. However, I also offer courses that will walk you through the design process with desktop affinity apps.
