Course Description

This course focuses on the basic concepts of analysis of beams (single spans or multispans), and portal frames (subjected to gravity loads and lateral loads) in order to obtain shear force diagram and bending moment. It is important to learn how to calculate the bending moment and shear forces diagrams for different types of structures and load. The course also covers the impact of flexibility/deformation of supports on the bending moment and shear force diagrams of statically indeterminate beams. We also discussed the concept of influence lines diagrams, which are essential to structural analysis in order to determine the worst possible loading scenario at a given location. This information is often used to design real-life structures. It has been also discussed how to approximate analyze frames subject to gravity, lateral load. This allows you to estimate the order of magnitude of shear force and bending moment that the member would experience in the structural members without having to do a 3-dimensional analysis. This course is designed to help fresh college graduates prepare for interviews in the field structural engineering. Understanding concepts such as shear force and bending moment diagrams is crucial.
