Course Description

The course focuses on caring for children and youth with profound to severe intellectual disabilities. To place the child in the middle of all the support levels, we use the concept of "circles". The child is surrounded by circles of education and care - including his or her parents, siblings, close friends, and caregivers. These include educators and health care workers, as well as family members, neighbors, and business owners. Every person can play a vital role in the lives of someone with intellectual disabilities. They could be seen both as caregivers and educators. This course will be of particular benefit to caregivers working in special centres or private homes. However, everyone in the care circle and education play a vital role and the course will prove useful. The course will help you gain a better understanding of the different levels of intellectual disabilities and their history. It will help you to better understand the ways that children with profound or severe intellectual disabilities can be supported and how to assist them in becoming active members of society. This course explores lifelong learning and focuses on brain development as well as the learning process.

We have gathered the expertise of a variety experts to help us determine how learning is best facilitated. We will be looking at the needs of children learning, planning learning activities and how to support multiple individuals who are working together to educate and care for children with profound to severe intellectual disabilities.

The last week focuses on advocacy, rights and caring relationships. The course's key theme is to empower caregivers and care for them.

If you need to prove your professional achievements for professional development, you may purchase a Verified Certificate. However, this option is not mandatory and you can apply to Financial Aid to cover the cost of the certificate.
