The EUI promotes academic training and research at the highest level on major issues facing European society. Its graduates have produced more than 2400 doctoral dissertations across four departments. The Robert Schuman Centre conducts cross-disciplinary and comparative research to address the key issues of European integration, European societies, and Europe's role in 21st-century global politics. It houses a large postdoctoral program and major research projects, data sets, and programmes. There are also a variety of working groups and ad-hoc initiatives.
The Historical Archives of the European Union are also housed at the European University Institute. The HAEU preserves and makes available for research archives deposited by EU institutions. They also collect and preserve private papers of individuals, movements, and international organizations that are involved in European integration.
Through initiatives that involve politicians, policy makers and civil society such as the annual State of the Union conference, the EUI extends its research beyond academic life.
