Institute Overview

The UAB worked to establish the foundations of a university model that respected the fundamental principles of autonomy, participation, and social responsibility. Francisco Franco's dictatorial regime in 1973 ended support for this model. He suspended the university's statutes, and relieved Rector Villar PalasA from his post. Dr Vicent Gandia Gormar and Dr Josep Cabrepiera were the two new rectors who were elected. The convictions that led to the UAB's first steps were the reason for the 1975 Bellaterra Manifest, which was the first document to recognize an independent, democratic, and socially responsible university.
