Power plant operators control and operate machinery that generates electric power. They are also responsible for maintaining these machines, which also includes auxiliary equipment, steam engines, air compressors, and generators. They also work with turbines (including steam turbines) that provide light and heat for other buildings.
Power plant operators check water gauges and steam gauges, as well as regulate the distribution of steam throughout the system. They must control the temperature of the water while they are handling this process. Power plant operators must ensure there is never any overload, and they must regulate line voltages and transmission loads. They must be able to clean and lubricate the power plant equipping to prevent failure or corrosion. While doing so, they must make inspections periodically to make sure these items function as expected over time. Power plant operators must also make sure they keep excellent records of their tasks and keep their work station clean to prevent accidents from occurring. Power plant operators must also be open to training lower-level employees.
An associate degree or bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred or required for this position. Several years' experience is frequently preferred. Highly developed observational, interpersonal, and communication skills are crucial for power plant operators.
