Senior application engineers are accountable to provide expert-level technical assistance to protect systems and automate tasks within their organizations. They are responsible for managing engineering tasks that relate to the operation of machines and their primary responsibilities is development and testing of software that meet the needs of the product. They analyze specifications for materials and select the best products to meet the requirements of customers and costs and create elaborate technical presentations to their the management team and customers which highlight the advantages of certain software over other applications.

Senior application engineers also offer professional training sessions to clients and employees in their company. They oversee the testing process to ensure product reliability, establish relationships with vendors outside of the organization to select equipment and also work towards generating savings in costs. Senior engineers in the field are involved in pricing and workload strategies. They also respond to calls regarding technical issues and serve as the point of contact between the operation department and clients.

An undergraduate degree from engineering or another related subject is required for this job. Additionally, a minimum of three years of proven expertise in a technical role is usually preferred. They must be knowledgeable about the methods for troubleshooting and configuration of applications and possess experience working with communication protocols used in networks. They must also have strong communication skills to communicate with clients and vendors to boost the profitability of the company. They should be able to be effective in a group working with engineers from other companies, possess advanced problem-solving skills and be able to work on their own with little supervision.
