2D animators employ a mix of their own imagination and computer programs that are specific to tasks to create visual images that give the impression of motion and this is different from 3D animation that adds depth to the mix. In simple terms, 2D animators create cartoons or similar animations that are characterized by an "flat" appearance like films and TV shows like The Simpsons, The Flintstones and other anime.
To create two-dimensional images an array of precise however similar images need to be created, which when combined, flow seamlessly like a cartoon or similar visual image that moves fluidly. Although it's a complex and lengthy process, the product is a film that is able to entertain, thrill and educate viewers in a variety of ways. It involves four main components: pre-production, development production, post-production, and pre-production. In the first two stages, the emphasis will be on developing, and enhancing the storyline and the concept. The images themselves are made in the production stage and the fine-tuning as well as special effects are added during the post-production stage.
The process of creating the images itself requires skill and creativity. Certain 2D animators spend hours drawing and painting each image as was the norm prior to the time computers were available. Although some still draw their own images however, the majority of 2D animators use special computer programs that allow for changing and fine-tuning every image depending on the need. Therefore, computer skills and an understanding of the software used are essential for the job and 2D animators need to be up-to-date on all updates and changes in computer programs as well as other related technologies.
The hours of work for 2D animators aren't the same between a part-time workstation behind computers to long hours of overtime, particularly when deadlines are approaching.
