Description

Fashion photographers primarily photograph fashion models in their clothes. The majority of the time, these photos are utilized in advertising and promotions in catalogues and other media to promote clothes to the general public or professional buyers on a retail basis. Designers may also employ an in-house fashion photographer to aid in the process of designing and revising and the photographer will shoot various mock-ups, or ideas on mannequins or models to serve as a basis for future iterations. The photographer aims to capture not only the ways that pieces of clothing are arranged and the way they could be worn by the consumer.

Photographers need to be aware of angles, lighting and other aspects of photography. This requires a lot of knowledge and/or experience in taking photos, and proficiency with professional editing software. Certain fashion photographers are certified or academic training in photography, too. The majority of the time, the fashion photographer has their own private studio that is controlled by elements such as backgrounds and lighting that are set prior to shooting. They can also work on location that often requires traveling and fieldwork in various indoor and outdoor locations and sometimes, shooting models on runways during fashion events.
