The training director is responsible for the employee training practices and procedures for a business. They have several initial tasks to perform at the beginning of a curriculum development cycle. First, the training director must establish what the training needs of the organization are; second, they establish the goals and direction for the training programs. To these ends, the training director starts by gathering data about the programs that are already in place. After the data about current programs is gathered, the training director works with subject matter experts to analyze the current programs for their strengths and weaknesses. The training director then writes a report on the conclusions of the analysis, providing opinion on what the goals of the training should be and recommendations on how to retain the strengths of the current program while overcoming weaknesses.
After submitting the reports to executive management and receiving approval, the training director oversees the implementation of new training policies and procedures. After the changes have been implemented, the training programs are reevaluated and tested. If the desired results are not met, the training policies and procedures are altered further to better the training programs. Once an acceptable level is met by the programs, the procedures are set and other training programs are analyzed. However, the process is ongoing and updates are constantly made to the training programs as new best practices are developed and as further efficiencies are envisioned and realized.
Training directors generally must have extensive experience in their field. They also should have experience leading and/or coordinating a team, as work with a number of individuals (potentially including subordinates) is required in this position.
