Geographic Information Systems (GIS) programmers and analysts assist in the development of programs that facilitate GIS and operate primarily using computers in office settings. They usually use and assist create proprietary tools and software to study trends in geography across the globe, and might collaborate together with others GIS programmers to take products and modifications through testing phases, beta programs and finally production.
GIS analyst programmers typically report to the director of the department responsible for programming, who reports to the senior management and is given tasks that are assigned to programmers. A degree from a college in a related area is usually required for this job, and analysts must have a solid background in computer modeling and programming software like AutoCAD.
GIS programmers and analysts can meet with a team of programmers to review the objectives of the week or day according to the schedule of production and work on create and implement the required modifications to applications. Analysts usually work during normal working hours, but extended hours are sometimes required to meet deadlines for production.
